A Walk

One of the highlights of going to stay at Mom and Dad's house is getting to go on walks around the place. Mom is so good about taking the boys walking in the woods, by the creek and around the pasture and on my most recent visit I took them on a few walks myself.

You can't explore without throwing rocks into puddles. The first time we went exploring Ace decided to go in after the rock…we had to head back to the house for dry clothes after that.

They are so fun for one main reason. When I go on those walks I'm instantly transported back to my childhood. Memories come flooding back and I start thinking like I did when I was 8, exploring the place over and over. I attempted to take a few pictures of the fun…of course they didn't capture the moments like I'd envisioned, but you'll get the idea.

I remember walking, running and playing over every inch of the place, and it seemed so huge when we were kids. We would play Robin Hood in the woods and even had our own Sherwood Forest, complete with a rock creek crossing that we named Clydesdale Crossing.

Looking up at Cooper from the creek bed.

Yee haw!

We had a Wise Old Tree that was perfect for climbing or pretending that it was our prairie home place. We even had a Royal Gorge, a section of the creek that was too wide and deep to cross.

Cooper thought he was king of the forest and wanted us to
follow him the entire time.

Ace waited on Papa, then helped him up the hill.

On the other side, we had the Haunted Forest, a section that we never played in because it just seemed creepy. And then there was the creek that we would explore on foot and by horseback. We'd ride our horses as far as we could into the woods, usually escaping some bad guys, renegade indians or medieval bandits, and then tie our horses and continue on foot.

Sliding down on some leaves and climbing over a tree, what fun!

We made many camps in that creek bottom and ran up and down playing and chasing each other, always deep in an imaginary world. Sometimes we'd bring ropes and tie them to trees at the top of the creek bed. Then we'd climb up and down the side.

Big piece of petrified wood and our old play house that's now an old cabin in the woods.
It was once in our backyard on stilts, with a sandbox under it. Lots of memories!

The creek was also the place that we ran to when we'd been misbehaving while Mom was on the phone and she gave us the look and mouthed "you're getting a spanking when I get off this phone." Zoom…we were instantly gone and didn't come back until we were sure she'd forgotten about whatever we'd done wrong.

GG helping the kids up the hill after the long walk.

It's fun to be able to share the special places with my kids now and I hope they continue to have as much fun exploring as we did when we were little.

"Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? O what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone -- while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?….The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features stand out like those of a garment." Those moments...

As moms we all have those moments when we just don't know what to do or how to react. Or those moments when we know how we want to react but have to take another breath so we make a better decision. Or those moments when you just think, "Is this really happening?" Seems like I've had several of those lately, brought on by the addition of a third child, the winter cold keeping us indoors, and just general growing pains for toddlers. If you're wondering what I'm talking about I'll share. I hope that you get a chuckle out of most of them, just as I have (although not in the moment).

That moment….

-       When you are changing a poopy diaper on a squirmy toddler and somehow, as you’re wrestling him, your sweater catches the sticky part of the dirty diaper and starts to pull it toward you.

-       When you are rocking your infant to sleep and he’s almost there and you hear your 1 year old walking around the house yelling “Mommy where are you?” Do you answer and risk him coming in and ruining the effort, or take your chances and stay silent?

-       When you’re lying down with your two older kids for nap and they are just about asleep and then you hear the infant start fussing in the other room. If you get up naptime is jeopardized, but if you stay there the infant may get out of control crying.

-       When you are nursing the baby and your almost 2 year old throws something at your 3 year old.

-       When the baby falls asleep at 7:30 after eating at 6:30 and you have to decide whether to put him down now and risk him waking as soon as your head hits the pillow, or wake him up to feed him (big no no, waking a sleeping baby around here).

-       When you’re on the road, baby is just getting to sleep good and you hear from the back seat “I have to go Tee Tee” or “Momma, dropped milk cup.”

-       When you’re so tired of disciplining kids and they disobey one more time.

-       When you are looking forward to going to town after three days cooped up in the house and the appointment you were going for gets cancelled, now that you are in the mood to go and havent gotten anything done at home.

-       When the baby is fussing and the almost 2 year old wakes up from his nap super grumpy and screaming in your face, not knowing what he wants and unable to get control of himself.

-       When all three kids are crying at once and you’re still 2 hours from Daddy being home.

-       When you’ve stripped and washed the sheets on both beds and then, due to diaper leaks, both beds are wet again.

-       When a child goes out the back door while you are nursing and you’re not sure if Daddy closed the yard gates when he left that morning.

-       When you get supper ready and plates fixed for the toddlers and one loses his mind because you gave him the wrong plate/cup/fork.

-       When you have a cute outfit for the kids to wear and the 3 year old picks some ‘comfies’ instead. Worth a fight?

-       When your toddler, who’s sharp as a whip and remembers like an elephant, starts quoting less than desirable phrases from commercials (such as ‘that’s freaky!’) or asks “What’s life’s bleachable moments mean?” when he sees the commercial about a kid pooping his pants (pretty sure he already knows the answer)

-       When you are occupied with something and suddenly realize it’s eerily quiet in the house and both the boys are still inside.

-       When you arrive at the grocery store and have to get a baby in the wearable carrier, the boys in the basket and not lock your keys in the car or forget the list. Or when you finish shopping and have to get them all back in the car and home.

-       When you’re burping the baby, feel a big bad burp coming up and realize your burp cloth is 2 feet away.

-       When you’re sharing a public bathroom stall with your son and he comments loudly “those are pretty underwear mama”…. “Thank you, now turn back around please!” is the only reply I can whisper, knowing for a fact that there are others in the restroom.

-       Or in the same situation when your toddler unlocks the stall door before you are ready for him to... “Nooooo!”

-       When you go into the boys’ room to find that they’ve pulled every single book off of their bookshelves and they greet you with guilty but oh so precious smiles.

-       When you leave the boys outside for just a minute while you get the baby and when you go check on them one has climbed over the fence into the pasture and the other one is at the top of the fence yelling “mama, mama!”

-       When you invite friends over for a play date and spend the entire time disciplining the children because they are being too rough with the guests or being selfish with their toys.

-       When I’ve messed up again by snapping at one of the boys instead of gently talking to him and showing mercy.

And then there are moments when….

-       You look in their room and they are both looking at books with each other or playing in the sand box, pushing dirt around and sharing the toys.

-       They are chasing each other around in the yard playing ‘hide and seek’ laughing so hard each time they run into each other that I can’t help but smile.

-       I’m snuggled up between them in bed reading books to them, or even better, reading Bible history (not stories, because they are true ; )

-       While snuggled between them I get hot and ask Cooper why he’s so close to me and he replies “because I like to snuggle close to you Mama.”

-       The boys huddle around Tucker and give him kisses and tell him they love him and  Cooper tells me thank you for giving him a new brother.

-       Everyone is at the table for supper laughing about the day and enjoying the meal and Cooper and Ace say their own original prayers that end with “thank you most of all for Jesus.”

-       Tucker and I are all alone in a quiet house at 3 in the morning while he falls back to sleep on my chest and all I hear is his sweet breathing in and out.

-       Our bed is overcrowded at 6 in the morning because Cooper and Ace wanted to come see us and we let them in to 'snuggle down.'

-       I hear giggles from the bathtub as the boys play and call each other ‘bubble heads’

-       The boys squeal with delight as they see Daddy’s truck pull into the driveway and they run to meet him at the door

-       One of the boys gives the other one his toy without being told to.

-       The boys belt out a worship song in the car on our way to church, even if it is too loud and off key.

-       Cooper makes up jokes and new words to songs he knows just to entertain us and make us laugh and
-       Ace dances around to music and looks up at me with those puppy dog eyes, begging for me to dance too.

-       Tucker smiles at me from his bouncer, showing off those dimples and bright eyes.

-       Cooper tells the pastor about the Christmas story at Christmas Eve service and I realize that even though my attempts at instilling Biblical truths are not organized or always successful, the Spirit takes my shortcomings and allows the boys to learn His truth anyway.

All the boys are napping at the same time.

-       All the boys are on their best behavior in public and remind me that it’s all going to be ok and we're going to make it.

-       I remember just how amazingly blessed I am not to have one healthy and happy child but three, and I remember not to take that for granted.

These are the moments that mean the most…the hard ones remind me that I can't do it on my own and it's only by God's grace that I can do this, and the good ones reassure me of just how wonderful God is to give me so many blessings and moments to treasure. And I have to always remember that this motherhood thing is a calling, one that I have from God….a high but oh so fruitful calling if I persevere and don't give up!

"Therefore since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of God."

Christmas Celebrations Part 2

After a wonderful Christmas in Graham, it was time to head south to have Christmas with the Moores. We packed up Christmas night and the next morning, waited for Dalton to finish his feeding and then headed out! We were excited to see everyone and get a chance to visit for a few days.

Ace practicing his Tigger bounce and Tucker stretching after a long ride in the car.

Of course there had to be a sword fight before we got to the gifts.
Papa gave him the instructions on how to fight properly.

We got there at about dark and chatted with everyone. Then we decided to open gifts. The boys were excited about that. They had become experts at this over the last couple of days. So we all opened gifts and oooed and ahhhed at what everyone received.

It's always entertaining to see what everyone gets because it's usually a surprise. Garrett won the prize this year for the most unexpected, yet greatly appreciated gift. He got Dalton and I 'furry Crocs'. Dalton was especially excited because he'd been asking for house shoes. And let me tell you, we have worn those Crocs a LOT since we got them. I appreciate them more and more each time I slip them on in the middle of the night on my way to take care of Tucker.

Fun times!

Mom and Dad were thinking of the distance between us when they did Christmas shopping, and they were thinking of how to get us to come visit more often…they got us a portable DVD player for the car. I thank them every time that I turn it on and ride in a quiet car.
The boys had a big time opening presents and they got some cool things too. I think their favorite from this round was a playhouse for in or outside. It makes a great hot dog stand, something they pretend a lot.

Anyone need a hot dog?

Settling down for bed. It was a full house so the boys slept on a mat in the living room.
I'm sure the twinkling Christmas lights helped them have sweet dreams.

After gifts, we had a good holiday dinner and finished the evening out playing with our gifts and watching the boys play with theirs. One gift goof that I made was when I ordered Castaway Cowboy for Garrett. I was so excited to give it to him and he was excited to get it, until we tried to watch it. Unfortunately when I ordered it on Amazon I neglected to realize that it was from the UK so we weren't able to play it on our DVD player. Not sure why they make it different, but it was a bummer. Looks like I'll be ordering again from the Disney site now.

Before we figured out it was a UK video

The next day we got ready for visitors and had another Christmas celebration. Grandma, Papaw, the Franks and Scherers all came over to visit.

Grandma met Tucker for the first time.

Loved getting to visit with family

We had a fun chinese Christmas gift exchange, all using things that we already had but didn't use anymore. That way we got to have the fun without the cost. I was a little worried when Dalton opened a set of clippers; he keeps threatening to cut Ace's hair! But luckily they got stolen.

 The smile says it all

Then we all did a couple of activities together, including guessing Christmas songs by scientific names. But my favorite was when we all shared our favorite names for Christ. It's always refreshing to hear what Christ means to others and how even though we have the same Lord, he is so many things to different people. We heard The Vine, Love, Lord, The Word, and several others. Parker and Paige also sang "How Many Kings" for us, an encore performance of one they did at church Christmas Eve.

Cooper and Logan did a little singing too.

Garrett was the historian for the moment, capturing it all on video

We finished the visit with yummy sandwiches and soup and games including dominoes and Apples to Apples. Paige and Pearson stayed the night so we had some extra late night fun playing Spoons; I even got to play a round when Tucker was happy. Unfortunately that weekend there weren't that many moments, his poor tummy and nose were giving him troubles.

Everyone's playing dominoes

Mom has the little bundle of joy, and a rousing game of spoons.

The next day we hung out, said good bye to Garrett and Amy and then visited with Aunt Vicky and Mycahla.

Visiting on the porch. Ace is heading out to feed with the guys.

And we had the Brian Moores over for pizza that evening. It was fun, but unfortunately I only snapped one picture so I didn't document well. Ava does Classical Conversations as part of her homeschooling and she sang a little of her history timeline song. It was pretty neat to hear and made me excited to explore the options out there for Cooper as the time approaches.

Cousins playing a tune together

Both the boys got matching hoodies from GG and Papa, so cute.

Sunday we loaded up all of our luggage, goodies and kids and got ready to head home. The boys settled in with a movie and Ace was asleep before we made it to Waco. We stopped at the mall and Dalton and Cooper went in to find some Levis for Cooper. When Ace woke up I strapped Tucker to me and we headed inside to find them. It's a bit of a workout carrying Ace and Tucker through a parking lot into the mall but I made it. We made the purchase, got Cooper a haircut (Dalton was going to get one until we asked how much it cost) and headed out of town with Whataburger in hand. We've quickly figured out that Cooper won't nap with the TV going so we had to turn it off so he would nap.
We stopped in Stephenville and Dalton got a haircut (at a very reasonable price I might add). Then we went by HEB for a couple of necessities. Cooper was asleep by then so Ace and Dalton went in. It's cute seeing Dalton and his boys going in to take care of business, always love sweet Daddy child moments. Any time we are in Stephenville I want to linger and just hang out. I so enjoyed living there and would move back in a heartbeat! I keep trying to think of excuses to go back.
Finally we made it home about dark and unloaded the car. I think it's taken me a good two weeks to get everything back to normal. I had to find places for the new things we received, clean out some old things and catch up on clothes and chores. It's an exhausting season celebrating Christmas, but I love it too. Another wonderful year is gone and now we're on to new challenges and adventures this 2014. I have a feeling it's going to be a big year for us.
